Objectives

The Double Majors in Faculty of Science are designed to train well grounded professional medical/clinical laboratory scientists with sound knowledge in a fundamental Biological science discipline or Chemistry. These professionals will provide high quality medical laboratory services to the Cameroonian population and beyond. This goal will be realised through lectures and specially designed tutorials delivered by highly qualified staff with a rich teaching experience. This will be accompanied by sound hands-on skills training through an intensive and varied practical repertoire covering all areas of Laboratory Medicine; this aspect of the training shall be ensured by modern, state of the art Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory which has been set up in the Faculty with the authorization of Ministry of Public Health. Also, the fundamental training in the pure sciences will equip the graduates with competencies to enable them serve as biomedical research assistants/technicians. The graduate shall also be equipped to alternatively pursue their career development in the area of the Biomedical sciences to a higher level. In summary, this professional training will render graduates very competitive in the job market particularly in the area of the biomedical sciences.

Graduation Requirements

The candidates shall earn at least240 credits in at least four years (8 semesters) to qualify for the award of the Double major BSc in Biochemistry, or Chemistry, or Microbiology, or Parasitology or Zoology and Clinical Laboratory Technology.

Skills Acquired

Bench skills in:

  • Sample collection and processing, analysis, interpretation of rows and reporting in Clinical Biochemistry and Endocrinology, Clinical Microbiology and Parasitology, Clinical Haematology, Histopathology and Cytology;
  • Quality control, laboratory entrepreneurship and management, handling of legal and ethical issues of the Clinical Laboratory Technology profession.
  • Skills in the respective majors (Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, Parasitology or Zoology outlined under the corresponding Departments in this syllabus book.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates with any of the double major degrees listed above can

  • be employed as Clinical/Medical Laboratory Scientist
  • be employed as a Clinical/Medical Lab Manager
  • be self-employed by opening and running a private medical laboratory
  • be employed as a trainer of junior medical lab technicians e.g. Assistant Laboratory Technicians
  • further their studies in the Medical Biosciences
