BOT308: Principles of Taxonomy andPHYtography 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

The course acquaints the students with the principles of taxonomy with a view to making them better understand the diversity of plants and also equip the students with the well knitted terminology and descriptors that enhance the use of taxonomic keys for plant identification.

Contents

Concept of taxonomy; development of the taxonomic thought; taxonomic hierarchy; classification and classification systems; principles of plant nomenclature; the ICBN, the ICNCP; techniques of plant identification; keys; herbaria and herbarium techniques; botanic gardens and nature reserves; descriptive plan for flowering plants including the habit, habitat, root system, stem, leaf, inflorescences, flower, perianth, calyx, corolla, androecium, gynoecium, fruits, and floral formulae.
