CHM343: Chemistry of Organic Compounds 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To expand on the concepts introduced in CHM 242, with particluar emphasis on the interconversion of functional groups, reaction mechanisms and synthesis as well as the applications of mass spectrometry, ultraviolet, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Contents

Chemistry of carbonyl compounds: synthesis, reactions and structure; special emphasis is laid on aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, amines and amino acids; peptides and peptide structure and synthesis; Carbohydrates: monosaccharides and polysaccharides; heterocyclic compounds; polynuclear aromatic compounds; reactions of aromatic compounds: electrophilic substitutions and Friedel-Crafts reactions; Lipids: waxes, triglycerides, saponification, and steroids; Polymers: classification and synthesis, natural and synthetic rubber; condensation polymers and addition polymers
