Admission Requirements

For admission into the M.Sc. degree programme, candidates must be holders of a first degree in Zoology or other biological discipline with at least a second class honours lower division or an equivalent degree from an approved university. Candidates who do not hold a first degree in Zoology or Biology (such as candidates from agriculture, veterinary medicine, etc) may be required to take as compulsory one or two undergraduate courses in Zoology should they be found deficient in knowledge of these courses.

Objectives

  • To enable students pursue the main subject of their first degree at greater depth, or to extend their range beyond the boundaries of the first degree.
  • To foster in the candidates, through instruction, a deeper understanding of concepts and increase their ability to apply fundamental ideas to new problems.
  • To orientate the students in the applications of Zoology to applied biological disciplines such as agriculture, livestock, medicine (medical and veterinary), environment, biotechnology, food and textile production, etc.
  • To develop in the candidate the spirit of enquiry through a training in research.
  • To direct the candidate to produce a thesis, which must demonstrate his/her competence in following up an appropriate method of research, exhibit sufficient degree of independence of approach or presentation; show satisfaction in literary presentation and references.

Graduation Requirements

The candidate for the award of an M.Sc. degree in Zoology must have demonstrated by written examinations and by presentation of a thesis that he/she has acquired an advanced level of knowledge in his/her field of study. The thesis must be original work comprising a satisfactory record of research undertaken by the candidate. It must be satisfactory in literary presentation and include adequate references. Each candidate must satisfy the examiners in respect of the examinations and of the thesis. The candidate must have earned a total of 120 credits (60 credits of course work,42 credits of thesis work,6 credits of Research Methodology and Scientific Writing skills , a pre-defence seminar and6 credits of Entrepreneurship) to qualify for the award of the degree.

Skills Acquired

Student acquires an in-depth knowledge of concepts in Zoology and develops a spirit of enquiry through training in research, and is thus able to apply fundamental ideas to new problems. He/she is able to apply the knowledge of Zoology to applied biological disciplines such as agriculture, fisheries, livestock, human and veterinary medicine; biotechnology, environment, food, textile production, etc.

Employment Opportunities

The M.Sc. graduate in Zoology is suited for immediate employment or may proceed for a higher degree. An M.Sc. degree in Zoology can lead to a wide variety of jobs in schools and universities, industries, medicine (medical and veterinary), agriculture, livestock and fisheries, environment, pure and applied research.
