Objectives

To provide students with principles and hands-on experience in a variety of biochemical separation methods.

Contents

Principles of electrophoresis, chromatography and centrifugation; HPLC; Protein Separation Methods: Separation according to charge: electrophoresis, iso-electrofocusing, isotachophoresis, ion-exchange chromatography; Separation according to size: gel filtration, membrane filtration, ultra centrifugation; Affinity chromatography; Purification of engineered/recombinant proteins; Nucleic Acid Separation: Extraction, precipitation of nucleic acids; DNA electrophoresis; Ultra-centrifugation methods; Use of commercial kits; Separation of small molecules: amino acids, peptides, sugars and lipids.
