Objectives

The Department of Chemistry insists on the commitment of its staff and students to the virtues of excellence, which must be reflected in the quality of course work and research. The training seeks to provide high-level manpower needed in research institutes and institutions of higher education. In order to gain experience in teaching, all postgraduate students are expected to participate in tutorials and laboratory practical training of undergraduates under the supervision of Faculty members. Candidates must acquire the skills needed for conceiving and writing research proposals of superior quality. They should be able to initiate and carry out research projects to completion successfully.

Graduation Requirements

PhD degree candidates must earn 180 credits, composed of course work, seminars and research leading to a doctoral thesis. During the first year, the student must earn at least 60 credits of prescribed course work. To ensure that students acquire knowledge in certain essential areas, all students are required to take certain courses; however, the program allows the student to choose from a list of Electives, courses that reflect his/her area of interest and specialization, including those that deal directly with the research project. Students must maintain good academic standing in order to remain in the program. Following the present grading system, a “C” grade is not considered satisfactory in the PhD program.

Employment Opportunities

Holders of the PhD degree are excellent candidates for employment as teachers and researchers at the university level. They are also very qualified for employment in industry and research institutions.
