CHM741: Heterocyclic Chemistry 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To expose the student to the nomenclature, chemistry and role of heterocyclic compounds in biological systems.

Contents

Recommended guidelines for heterocyclic compounds; physicochemical properties of elected monocyclic and (3 -, 4 -, 5 -, 6- and 7-membered) and fused (6-5, 7-5, 6-6-5, 6-5-7) heterocycles; examination of -electron-rich and -electron-poor heterocycles; methods of synthesis of selected widely used heterocyclic systems; aromaticity of heterocyclic compounds; reactions of selected heterocycles; chemistry and biology of selected naturally occurring heterocycles.
