CHM729: Non-aqueous Solvents and Chemical Reactions 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To explore the role of non-aqueous solvents in chemical reactions, so as to better understand their influence on the progress and outcome of chemical reactions.

Contents

Important physical properties of solvents; classification of solvents; types of reactions in solvents; acid-base reactions; metathetical reactions, solvolytic reactions and redox reactions, etc.; the effect of various solvent properties on solution behavior of compounds; studies of some specific non-aqueous solvents viz ammonia, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, acetic acid, hydrogen sulfide, ethanol, ether, chloroform and molten salts, etc.; applications of non-aqueous solvents in nanocrystal synthesis and radiation studies.
