Objectives
To introduce genomes, genetics and present functional genomics as the systematic analysis of gene function; and proteomics as a system biology tool in identifying and characterizing all proteins synthesized in a cell.
Contents
Revision of undergraduate molecular biology; biochemical genetics; The human Genome; somatic cell genetics; polygenic inheritance; linkages and patterns. Genome Sequencing projects, Assembling genome sequences, Sequence polymorphisms in genomes and SNPs, Gene Discovery – Expressed Sequencing Tags (ESTs); Transcriptome analysis; cDNA microarrays, oligonucleotide microarrays, Metabolomics, Forward and Reverse Genetics, RNAi-mediated Gene Silencing, Gene Knockouts, Micro-RNAs and Small RNAs, Genomics as a systems biology tool; two-hybrid systems.
Proteins - review of amino acids, peptides, composition, structures, Protein 3D Structures, motifs, domains, homology, glycoproteins; Protein Identification and sequencing; Proteome and proteomics, Mass spectrometry-based proteomics, 2-D gels and analysis, protein-protein interactions and networks.
