ENV304: Environmental Health 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To study the control and management of environmental health problems emanating from waste disposal, diet, food processing and quality control, pollution and housing standards. Course also aims at understanding occupational hazards and public health.

Contents

Disposal of domestic and hazardous waste in landfill sites; collection and disposal; incineration; Composting and recycling; effect of diet, food processing; safety and quality control; Air and water pollution control; housing standards and environmental quality; occupational hazards: Principles of identification; evaluation and control of chemical; physical and biological factors in the work place that affect workers’ health and well being; Pesticides and herbicides: Occurrence in the food chain and biological consequences; patterns of disease: public health and epidemiology, as well as influences of legislation.
