Admission Requirements

Candidates who hold a good Master's degree in an appropriate Biological Science discipline shall be eligible for enrolment into the Ph.D. programme. The Department reserves the right to conduct a selection test and interview when deemed necessary.

Objectives

The Ph.D programme aims at producing graduates who are capable of initiating and conducting innovative research. A major objective of the programme is to develop critical thinking, provide the young researcher with appropriate theoretical and practical training in observation, experimental design and evaluation of scientific literature. At the end of the programme, successful candidates are expected to have carried out research leading to rows that significantly contribute to the advancement of knowledge. The programme shall normally last for 3 years, one of which shall be devoted to coursework and the remaining two to research. With the permission of Senate, the programme can be extended to a maximum of 6 years. Specific Objectives

  • The Microbiology programme aims at producing Microbiologists/Immunobiologists who should be able to initiate and successfully conduct innovative research.
  • It is also aimed at providing the young researcher with the requisite theoretical and practical training in experimental design and critical thinking.

Graduation Requirements

To obtain the Ph.D. in the Department, the candidate shall fulfil the conditions set below:

  • He/she shall undertake and pass in60 credits of course work during the first year for full-time students and at most 2 years for part-time students.
  • Depending upon the candidates background and desired specialty, the Department may prescribe remedial undergraduate and M.Sc. courses not exceeding 12 credits, thereby bringing the total load up to 192 credits.
  • Exemption may be obtained from all or part of the Ph.D. course work under the following conditions:
    • if the candidate holds a "Doctorat de Troisieme Cycle" in the chosen field of specialization;
    • if the candidate has successfully completed similar coursework in an approved university;
  • The candidate shall conduct original research, write and successfully defend a doctoral thesis publicly.
  • The candidate shall satisfy any other requirements of postgraduate studies as may be duly approved for the Faculty of Science.

Employment Opportunities

A graduate may get into teaching and research in Universities, other institutions of higher learning, or take up full-time research in research institutes or industries.
