Objectives

To introduce arthropod diversity and economic importance; insect development and basic concepts of insect pest control/management.

Contents

Characteristics and evolution; structural diversity of arthropods (Chelicerata, Crustacea, Uniramia and Insecta); Life history; reproduction; types of insect development and developmental stages; moulting; metamorphosis (incomplete and complete); classification, (major insect orders); insect functional morphology and anatomy; physiology,; feeding and respiration; insects as pests; overview of pest control methods (physical, chemical, biological, genetic, resistant strains, IPM).
