PHY714: N-body theory and strongly correlated electron systems 6 credits (40-20-0)

Objectives

To explore models of the one-dimensional free and interacting electron gas from recent developments, and discuss their role in the current understanding electronic and structural instabilities in low-dimensional systems.

Contents

This course will be devoted to general properties of the Luttinger liquid and the different treatments of it including the bosonisation and the renormalization group treatment, Applications to electronic instabilities will be discussed with an emphasis on charge and spin density wave instabilities, the competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity, Peierls and spin-Peierls instabilities and quantum criticality.
