PHY638: Thermo-fluid Mechanics 6 credits (40-20-0)

Objectives

To introduce advanced topics in incompressible and compressible fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. Applicable and is aimed at studying phenomena involving energy transfer.

Contents

Fluid Dynamics: Cauchy equation, Navier-Stokes equation, generalized Bernoulli equation, adiabatic compressible flow in a duct of variable area. Energy equation and application: energy equation, application to energy systems, heat of reaction and calorific value, unsteady and steady heat conduction, numerical methods. Introduction to heat exchangers: co-flow, counter flow and industrial exchangers. Turbulent Convection: Reynolds analogy, internal and external flows.
