PHY628: Waves, Soliton and Non-linear Phenomena 6 credits (40-20-0)

Objectives

To introduce students to non-linear waves and the fascinating notion of solitons.

Contents

The topics treated would include: Description and theory of non-linear wave phenomena in physical systems, similarity transformations, the inverse-scattering transform, the Korteweg-de Vrais (KDV) and related equations, and solitons in different areas of physics (classical mechanics, electrical networks, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, etc).
