PHY617: Physics of Brian and Nerve 6 credits (40-20-0)

Objectives

To gain an understanding of the nerve and brain function, in particular with respect to the physical principles underlying memory, cognition, behaviour and neuronal diseases (for example Alzheimer, Parkinsonism, Creutzfeld-Jakob diseases).Outcomes: at the end of this course, students are expected to have acquired to have gained enough insight to probe into some of the still unknown illnesses.

Contents

Voltage-gated ionic conductance, non-linear properties of excitable membranes, neuronal structure and function, neurotransmitters, synaptic structure and function, dendritic structure and functions plasticity and connectivity in neuronal networks, brain and spinal anatomy, positron emission tomography (PET), functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI), trancranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electro-encephalography (EEG).
