PHY314: Special Relativity 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To expose the theory of special relativity and its application to Maxwell’s theory of electromagnetism. It aims to acquaint students with the detail structure of relativity, which cannot be provided for in PHY 305 and PHY 301.

Contents

Review of Lorentz transformation and relativistic kinematics, General Lorentz – transformations and the Lorentz group, Four- vectors and Relativistic invariants, Dynamics and binary collisions, Introduction to Tensors, energy momentum tensor, Relativity and Electromagnetism in vacuum, Transformation of fields and elementary examples of the motion of charged particles in electromagnetic fields.
