PCH361: Chemistry of Medicinal Plants 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To introduce the student to the rich ethnomedical culture of Cameroon and the biodiversity that abounds in the region, and to stimulate interest in natural products-based drug discovery for major diseases of local interest.

Contents

Ethnomedical survey of plants used to treat a variety of diseases and their chemistry; Treatment of diseases using the traditional organ/system classification; chemotaxonomy in the classification of major pharmacologically active chemotypes; the role that natural products have played and continue to play in modern drug development; the processing of plant material and the isolation of active ingredients from plants.
