PCH261: Introduction to Chemical Toxicology 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To introduce the student to the fundamental principles of toxicology and the broad range of areas of applications of this discipline.

Contents

General principles, disposition of toxicants, nonorgan-directed toxicity, target organ toxicity, and a survey of toxic agents; application such as food and cosmetics, analytical/forensic and occupational toxicology; mechanisms of toxicity; risk assessment; absorption, distribution and excretion of toxicants; biotransformation of xenobiotics; toxicokinetics; chemical carcinogenesis; genetic toxicology; developmental toxicology; toxic responses of blood, immune system, liver, kidney, nervous system and other major organ/systems; and toxic effects of pesticides, metals, solvents, radiation, plants and animals.
