PAR602: Molecular Tools and Vectors Control 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

This course aims to provide students with knowledge and critical understanding of population biology as applied to vector ecology with an emphasis on the practical methods used and the relevance for epidemiology and control.

Contents

Chemical control and how to apply it against various types of insect vector, and against snails, environmental management to prevent breeding of vectors and biological (including genetic) control methods. Practical classes on mosquito larval control and insecticide resistance. Visits (a) to learn about, and to handle, insecticide application machinery and (b) to observe mosquito populations at the field station and to test repellents against them.
