PAR404: Population Genetics of Parasite 6 credits (40-0-20)

Objectives

To introduce students to the study of allele frequency distribution and change under the influence of the main evolutionary processes such as natural selection, genetic drift, mutation and gene flow in the population of parasitic organisms.

Contents

Principles of Medelian genetics, Darwinian natural selection, history of population genetics, Hardy-Weinberg Principle, the four processes: natural selection, genetic drift, mutation, gene flow; Genetic diversity, population structure, evolutionary history of parasites and adaptations to their hosts. Parasite development and diseases. Mutations in parasites, mechanisms of gene regulation and drug resistance in parasites.
