PAR302: Parasite Taxonomy and Systematic 6 credits (40-0-20)

Objectives

The course will enable students to understand the relationship among parasitic organisms that allow the prediction of virulence mechanisms, reconstruction of metabolic pathways, identification of potential drug targets, elucidation of parasite-specific cellular processes and understand the interactions with the host or vector.

Contents

The course deals with the organization, classification and naming of parasites into groups reflecting their natural, phylogenetic relationships, evolutional relationships and adaptations between groups of parasites. The usefulness of morphological and molecular data for phylogenetics analysis will be discussed.
