Objectives

To study the underlying principles of materials degradation and protection for metallic materials.

Contents

The electrochemical cell, corrosion as an electrochemical process, galvanic couples, concentration, stress and micro-cells; Crevice and intergranular corrosion and selective leaching; Classification of corrosives and environments, effect of metallurgical state, electrode kinetics, polarisation, over-potential and corrosion currents (corrosion rates), high temperature oxidation of metallic materials, passivation, anodic and cathodic protection, protective coatings and use of inhibitors for corrosion control.
