BCH617: General Toxicology 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To broaden students experience in the sciences of toxins (poisons) and their influences on biological systems and the environment as well as to introduce students to toxicology applications in drug development.

Contents

The history of the science of toxicology; toxicant type (poisons, pesticides, solvents, oils, estrogen, estrogen mimics, triclosan, carcinogens, teratogens, natural toxins and other pollutants); adsorption, distribution, metabolism, biological elimination, sequestration, and remediation; Mammalian systems with emphasis on target organs, detoxification and adverse effects; General Toxicology and drug development: Acute and repeated dose studies; Rodent vs. non-rodent designs; Toxicology endpoints; Toxicokinetics; No-observable effect levels and therapeutic exposure multiples. Limit dose and other toxicity methods.
