MOL408: Advanced Molecular Biology 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To provide advanced knowledge on key molecular biology topics

Contents

Details of Gene Expression; Recombination; Mutations and SNPs, repairs, transposition, gene cloning; current topics in Molecular Biology.

Oncogenes and cancer: Experimental system leading to the identification of dominantly-acting oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes. Human cancer as a disease from the pathological, clinical and molecular biological viewpoints including concepts of progression and metastasis. Indepth study of the involvement of DNA repair systems, of oncogenes and of tumour suppressor genes in such processes as growth and apoptosis in human tumours and cancer including a critical discussion of molecular biological model systems which have been used for such study. Additional changes in a cell which lead to the development of the capability of the cancer cells to metastasise; presentation of the information used to create a picture of the progression of a normal cell to metastatic, malignant cancer cell.
