MOL304: Genome Organization, Evolution and Analysis 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To generate an understanding and discussion of current ideas with respect to genome evolution, organisation and analysis. In eukaryotes, to understand the C-value paradox, the function, generation and evolution of non-gene related genome sequences and how they relate to organismal function, reproduction and evolution. In prokaryotes, to understand the importance of horizonetal gene transfer in shaping prokaryotic genomes.

Contents

Procaryotic and Eukaryotic genome organization; Theories of the evolution of genome organization; Genome analysis; Different sequence types found in prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes and their functions/evolution relationships.
