MDE604: Molecular Forensics, DNA Testing and Forensic statistics 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To provide an in-depth coverage of the tools of DNA-based forensics, DNA testing, as well as the detection of foreign molecules (poisons, performance enhancement substances, drug levels) in body fluids: the principles and practices.

Contents

Sample acquisition and processing; Principles, techniques and applications of DNA fingerprinting: a) Criminal investigation (personal identification) b) Immigration c) Paternity dispute d) Identification of missing children; bodies found in plane crash, road accidents etc.; e). Identification of animals, protected animals, especially when dried; ethical and regulatory issues. Forensic statistics: Allele frequencies for populations; paternity index; combined paternity index; validity and reliability of results.

Xenobiotics Detction: Introduction to xenobiotics; methods used - HPLC-MS, ELISA, TLC, Commercial kits, etc.
