Objectives

To acquaint students with the major classes on antimicrobial agents and their mechanisms of action and development of resistance.

Contents

Characteristics of an ideal antimicrobial agent; major classes of antibiotics, and their mechanisms of action; antifungal, antiviral, anti-protozoan and anti-helminthic agents, clinical strategies of prescription in development of antimicrobial and chemotherapeutic agents; antibiotic sensitivity assays; resistance and abuse of antimicrobial agents.
