Objectives

To present an advanced treatment of the structure and function of proteins, clarify their roles in cellular function, and examine methods of purifying and characterising them.

Amino Acids: Classification, diversity, reactions, separation and quantitative determination; Peptide structure: Levels of protein organisation and stabilising forces; Methods for protein structure determination: sequence determination, principles of X-ray crystallography; Structure motifs, protein folds, domains and tertiary structure; Examples of protein structure: globular, fibrous, membrane bound, Adenine nucleotide binding proteins; Study of original articles on protein structure and function; Protein sequence databases.
