MAT606 : Mathematical Ecology and Biology 6 credits (40-20-0)

Objectives

To provide a mathematical framework for modelling biological systems. This is a multi-discipline course that can be taken by Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics students alike, who wish to enhance their mathematical modelling skills.

Contents

Continuous population models for single species; Discrete population models for single species; Continuous models for interacting populations; Reaction kinetics; Simple random walk derivations of the diffusion equation; Reaction diffusion equations; Linear stability analysis; Spatial-pattern formation with reaction/population interaction diffusion mechanisms; Epidermic models and the dynamics of infectious diseases.
