GLY706: Environmental Geology and stability of soil and rock layers 6 credits (40-5-15)

Objectives

To examine various aspects of Environmental Geology with emphasis on aspects requiring more urgent research. The course also aims at presenting case studies to allow for a deeper understanding of the role of Environmental Geology in enhancing the state of the planet.

Contents

Morphological and geotechnical classification of landslides and other mass movements; use of hemispherical projections in the analysis for two or three dimensional failures in granular and cohesive soils and rocks, toppling failures; site investigation of landslides and shear strength parameters. Earthquake – and volcanoes – induced failures and landslides. Slope development and stabilisation measures. Coastal processes and marine incursions. Case studies.
