GLY614: Advanced Petroleum Geology 6 credits (10-30-12)

Objectives

To develop an understanding of the evolution of sedimentary basins, the origin, migration and accumulation of petroleum and the use of this knowledge in the exploration and recovery of oil and gas.

Contents

Origin of Sedimentary Basins. Theories of the origin of petroleum. Primary and secondary migration of petroleum. Petroleum reservoirs; use of cores and wireline logs in reservoir evaluation and subsurface facies analysis. Entrapment of Petroleum Geochemistry; source rock identification from the amount, type and maturation level of organic matter. An overview of petroleum exploration. Case studies of petroliferons oil and gas basins. Laboratory studies in subsurface geology.
