To study interpretative aspects of petrology and the use of field and geochemical data in rock classification.

Petrogenesis of igneous rocks; detailed microscopic analysis, physico-chemical principles operative during the generation of igneous rocks. Discriminant analysis in chemical classification of igneous rocks. Granite petrology and the granite controversy. Metamorphic minerals, rocks, processes and facies. Presentation of rock associations and examination of the constraints on models of their origin. Instrumental techniques in petrology.
