GLY316: Metamorphic Geology 6 credits (10-30-12)

Objectives

To study the chemical, mineralogical, and textural changes in rocks due to changing environmental conditions (metamorphism).

Contents

Metamorphism and metamorphic reactions; effect of P-T conditions of metamorphism on mineral stability. Role of fluid in metamorphic reactions. Metamorphic differentiation and metasomatism. Equilibrium curves. Mineralogy, textures, fabric and classification of metamorphic rocks. Phase rule and diagrammatic representation of mineral paragenesis on ACF and AKF diagrams. Concept of metamorphic facies and studies of contact, regional, dynamic and polymetamorphism. Petrographic studies of rocks of various metamorphic facies, hornfelses, phyllites, schists, marbles, quartzites, amphibolites, gneisses and granulites. Eclogites and migmatites, anatexis and granitisation. Distribution of metamorphic rocks in Cameroon.
