GLY210: Geochemistry and Mineral Chemistry 6 credits (10-30-12)

Objectives

To train students on the various geochemical principles, physical and inorganic chemical processes and how they can be used in solving geologic problems in various geologic environments.

Contents

Energy states in mechanical systems and in atoms. Phase equilibria and chemical kinetics. Rate and order of reactions. The nature of light. The atom, heavier atoms and atomic spectra. Ionic bonding and ionic lattice, covalent models, mixed and other bonds. The chemistry of elements of the periodic table. Elements of Groups IA, IIA and their geological occurrence. Transition metals. Chemical affinities of elements and their tendencies in geological systems. Abundances and distribution of elements.
