GLY201: Historical Geology and Principles of Stratigraphy 6 credits (10-30-12)

Objectives

To study the Geological Time Scale, its stratigraphic record, and tectonic activities over geologic time as shown in the rock record.

Contents

Introduction to the principles of Historical Geology. Evolution of the Earth’s lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere through geologic time. The evolution of geologic concepts with time, the age of the Earth and evolution of life within the time stratigraphic record. The Geological Time Scale as represented in rocks in Cameroon as well as tectonic cycles. Principles of correlation and dating of sedimentary strata. Nomenclature and classification of stratigraphic units. Synthesis of stratigraphic data and biostratigraphy. Concepts and tectonics of sedimentary environments, facies and unconformities. An introduction to radiometric dating.
