Objectives

To introduce the students to the current state of the art in the field of networking technology and also discuss alternative techniques, including higher speed versions of existing network technologies and Internet network developments.

Overview of networking and computer communications; Multi-server high speed digital networks; Traffic; routing and performance issues; Asynchronous transfer mode; broadband ISDN; Switch and Network Architectures; Other WAN and MAN techniques for high speed data transfer; In-band signalling; ATM and internet developments; Fast Ethernet; Free space communications: infrared; microwave; satellite; Impact of optical technology on networking; Navigation maps, etc.) and user interaction design (including theories of auditory and visual perception); Multimedia Content including text, sound, graphics, animation, and video; Software environment and programming tools, e.g. Authoring systems; object-oriented frameworks; program libraries.
