Objectives

To explore an encyclopaedic review of chemical manufacturing processes; show the integration of processing steps and equipment in practice using some of the manufacturing processes, supplemented by field trips.

The manufacturing industry: sulphuric acid; hydrochloric acid; ammonia; caustic soda; soaps and detergents; manufacture of cement; sugar manufacturing processes; production of pharmaceuticals; production and utilization of fertilizers; production and processing of metal ores; the Petroleum Industry: reservoirs and permeability; petroleum refining; petrochemicals; and natural gas processing; Introduction to biotechnology; basic aspects of biotechnology; industrial fermentation processes; polymer processes and rubber technology; basic aspects of polymer processing; pulp and paper technology; production and processing of pulp; production of paper.
