CPS301: Principles of Horticultural Crop Production 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To give an in-depth perception of the theoretical and practical procedures involved in the production of fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants (indigenous and exotic).

Contents

Classification of vegetable crops; nursery practices; field establishment and fertilisation of vegetable crops; site selection; field layout; fruit orchards and their management; ornamental plant production, distribution and utilisation; establishment and maintenance of grasses for different turf types; concepts and techniques of landscaping; disease and pest management in horticulture. An overview of temperate horticultural practice and crops; Vegetable seed production and certification; Domestication and improvement of wild tropical flower plants; Floriculture as an income/foreign- exchange earner: The Eastern and Southern Africa success story.
