Contents

A. Basic concepts and definitions: accuracy, precision, concept of error, analytic sensitivity and specificity, analytic range, blank measurements, detection limit, interferences, recovery.

B. Performance standardization

C. Selection of analytical methods

D. Evaluating an analytic method

E. Tracking physiological and pathological changes

F. Monitoring disease progress or treatment using the laboratory

G. Clinical interpretation of laboratory procedures: spectrum, classification bias, specificity and sensitivity, predictive value and limits, interpreting a test, odd ratio, Baye’sTheorem.

H. Reporting systems

• Interpretative reporting of results for appropriate treatment.

• The role of the laboratory report in antibiotic stewardship and infection control initiatives.
