CHM498: Integrated Practical Training and Research Project in Chemistry 6 credits (40-10-10)

Objectives

To teach essential laboratory techniques through experimentation and to introduce the student to scientific research methods.

Contents

This course consists of basic undergraduate experiments in chemistry which are used to teach essential laboratory techniques. The experiments span the areas of general organic, inorganic and physical chemistry as well as some analytical work. Wherever possible, innovative experiments are developed and local materials are used. For the chemistry research project, the student pursues an individual investigation, which is carried out under the supervision of a Faculty member. The research project begins with the identification of a problem and a survey of the literature on the identified problem. This is followed by experimental work in the laboratory and preparation and submission of a report upon completion of the project. An entirely literature or theoretical investigation of a specific subject is acceptable. It is the responsibility of the student to see to it that the typed report is done satisfactorily.
