Objectives

To provide a thorough introduction to the most important fundamental principles of organic chemistry and explain the structure and chemical reactivity of functional groups in terms of molecular orbitals, stereochemistry, resonance, inductive effects, simple syntheses and nomenclature.

Structure and properties of organic molecules ; hybridisation and bonding in organic molecules; molecular orbitals and shapes of molecules, electronic effects : resonance, polarity of bonds; nomenclature, alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides; organometallic reagents, alcohols, ethers, thiols, benzene and polyaromatics; reactions of aromatic compounds; Reactions of organic compounds; nucleophilic and electrophilic substitutions; elimination reactions; Stereochemistry; Introductory applications of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy; infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
