Objectives

To enable students to formulate an approach to test new potential therapeutic agents or combination of agents for vitro and in vivo efficacy and to position the therapy for specific infections where it may have therapeutic promise. The experimental models will also be useful for the understanding of pathogenesis of parasitic infections and the development of diagnostic tests.

Contents

In vitro culture techniques and experimental models; principles of animal care and current techniques appropriate for the use of animal models of parasitic infection with details on a wide range of animal models including rodents, rabbits, cats, and primate; descriptions of how to set up the model; major advantages and limitations of each model;

ethical and safety considerations for the use of experimental models of parasitic infections.
