Objectives

To give students basic knowledge in aquatic ecosystems and hydrology.

Contents

The course covers: hydrological cycles, phytoplankton, characteristics of fresh water and marine ecosystems and factors that influence the distribution of their biological diversity; water catchments and watershed management; wetland and lake ecology management; pollution and its indicators; toxic substances and suspended solids; non-toxic salts including salinisation; eutrophication; algal toxins; water quality assessment. An overview of different classes of plant forms recorded as fossils; their relationship to the present living forms.
