Objectives
To explain the origin of invertebrates, their systematics and biology, and their evolutionary relationships as well as their economic importance.
Contents
Origin of life; animal systematics; zoological nomenclature and the code; Taxonomic levels and phylogenetic schemes; an examination of the invertebrate phyla with emphasis on classification; comparative morphology, physiology, evolutionary relationships and general biology of the following groups:- Protozoa; Porifera; Cnidaria; Ctenophora; Platyhelminthes; Nematoda; Annelida; Mollusca; Arthropoda and Echinodermata; Laboratory exercises to complement the lectures and introduce the subject matter through microscopic and macroscopic examination; dissection and various visual aids.
