PHY709: Statistical mechanics and phase transitions | 6 credits (40-20-0) |
Objectives
To provide knowledge on recent developments in the statistical mechanics of classical and quantum phase transitions in electronic, magnetic and ferroelectric materials.
Contents
The course will explore classical approaches to the statistical physics of structural phase transitions such as ferroelectric and magnetic phase transitions, and recent developments on the role of quantum fluctuations and the non adiabaticity of phonon and/or electron degrees of freedom; Some important points considered are the classical Landau fluctuations on the thermodynamic of the transition, critical exponents near quantum phase transition points, renormalization-group approaches to one-dimensional quantum electronic, and magnetic lattice models.
