To acquaint with the theories and techniques of condensed matter physics.

Introduction: Definition of condensed matter, energy and potentials and their scalesCrystalline solids: Symmetry, crystal structure, space groups, Liquid crystals, Amorphous solids, Quasi crystals; Thermodynamics of condensed matter: Phase transitions and ensembles, Landau theory, Ising model of mean field theory, liquid – solid transition – density fluctuation theory; Dynamics of condensed matter: Correlation and response functions, elastic waves and phonons, dissipation, scattering and partial cross-section, inelastic scattering, scattering of neutrons, photons, charged particles.
