PHY602: Wind Turbine Aerodynamics | 6 credits (40-20-0) |
Objectives
To treat classical aerodynamic theory followed by a treatment which aims at integrating wind turbines into the general class of axial-flow turbo-machines. Some practical aspects of wind turbine design and manufacture are also considered.
Contents
Aerodynamics: Cascade nomenclature and forces, velocity triangles, relationship between angles, ideal performance optimisation; Thermodynamics of a stage: enthalpy-entropy diagram, variation of stagnation and relative stagnation enthalpies, power output; Impulse model for HAWT turbines: Consequences, energy loss, performance optimisation; Design and Manufacture: other strategies, blade surface generation, introduction to speed control, design example.
