GLY708: Applied Structural Geology and Remote Sensing | 6 credits (40-5-15) |
Objectives
This course examines the use of structural geological data and remote sensing in various applications such as mineral and petroleum exploration, and the delineation of weak crustal zones.
Contents
Interpretation of the structural aspects of ore control, fossil fuel accumulation, basin structure and environmental geology. Determination of SH (maximum horizontal stress) in a contemporary stress field e.g. around volcanoes. Relationship between mechanical properties and structural behaviours of geological materials. Mechanisms of brittle crack propagation and ductile deformation. Case studies.
