GLY615: Statistical Analysis in Earth Sciences 6 credits (10-30-12)

Objectives

This course is designed to improve on the numerical ability and analytical skills of the students. It also aims at training them on data acquisition procedures and presetting options.

Contents

The conception of research topics; Developing research proposals: feasibility assessment and model testing of research procedures. Sampling techniques, designs and hypothesis testing. Good Laboratory practices. Data reduction using basic univariate statistics: mean, median, mode, standard deviation. Graphical presentation of data: bar charts, histograms, pie charts and scatter plots. Multivariate statistics; R-and Q-mode factor analysis, principal component analysis and correlation coefficient. Discriminate analysis, kriging and data filtering techniques. Weighting techniques and evidential belief functions. Case studies of multivariate statistical treatment of geological data. Trend surface analysis.
